The Angevin Empire

Qui sunt qui pugnant audaciter? Andegavenses.
Qui sunt qui superant inimicos? Andegavenses.
Qui sunt qui parcunt superatis? Andegavenses.
Egregios igitur livor neget Andegavenses.

(Who are they who fight boldly? The Angevins.
Who are they who overcome enemies? The Angevins.
Who are they who spare the vanquished? The Angevins.
Let envy alone deny the illustrious Angevins.)

-Marbod of Rennes, Ornamentis verborum (tr.T.N. Bisson)

About this website

This website is intended to serve as a resource for students and researchers interested in all aspects of the world associated with Henry II of England, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their heirs. At its greatest extent, the agglomeration of lordships we call the "Angevin Empire" stretched from the foothills of the Pyrenees in the south to Scotland in the north and from the borders of the Holy Roman Empire in the southeast to Ireland and the Atlantic in the northwest. This rulers of this enormously diverse area were the Angevin kings and queens, who constantly traversed these territories, stopping to hold meetings of their vibrant court, from 1154, when Henry of Anjou was first crowned king of England, until 1204, when King Philip II Augustus of France began his conquest of the Angevin continental domains. Although the legacies of the Angevin Empire lasted well beyond this neat 50-year period, the momentous events, captivating historical personalities, and extraordinary cultural production render this half-century one of the most recognizable and closely studied periods of the Middle Ages.
This site was constructed by the Fordham University History graduate class HIST 6077 Angevin Empire, and it includes contributions from:
